Jean Muller was born in 1979. He
attended his first piano lessons with Marie-José Hengesch at the
Conservatory of Luxembourg at the age of six. Only one year later he
gave his first public performance, creating a work of his compatriot
Alexander Mullenbach. But it is only at the age of 15, when - as the
result of his excellent studies - he was granted a scholarship to study
one semester with professor Teofils Bikis at the Latvian state academy
for music in Riga, that he decided to devote his life to music.
Afterwards, he studied in Brussels, Paris and Munich with Evgeny
Moguilevsky, Gerhard Oppitz, Eugen Indjic and Michael Schäfer. Besides
his studies it was his father and mentor Gary Muller, professor for
piano in Luxemburg, who had a major influence on his musical
development. During master classes he has also been advised by such
distinguished artists as Anne Queffélec, Leon Fleischer, Janos Starker,
Fou Ts'ong...
Since 1994 Jean Muller has received a lot of awards: among others the
first prizes of the competition in Arcachon, of the “Jean Françaix”
competition and of the “Francis Poulenc” competition. Jean Muller is
also a laureate of the “Tribune Internationale des Jeunes Interprètes” (TIJI)
organized by the European Broadcast Union (EBU) in the name of the
UNESCO. On several occasions Jean Muller performed successfully on
official state visits of Their Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke Henri and
the Grand Duchess Maria-Teresa of Luxemburg. In 2007 His Royal Highness
the Grand Duke Henri elevated Jean Muller to the rank of Knight of the
Civil and Military Order of Merit of Adolph of Nassau.
Jean Muller has appeared on
major stages (Megaron Athens, Forbidden City Concert Hall Beijing,
Philharmonie Luxemburg, Culture and Congress Centre Luzern, Salle Cortot
Paris, Arsenal Metz, Philharmonie München, Liederhalle Stuttgart…), and
is regularly invited by international festivals (Festival Bourglinster,
Festival A*Devantgarde Munich, Festival Echternach, Festival de Saintes,
KotorArt, Incontri pianistica di Cosenza, PianoTexas). Jean Muller
performs extensively with orchestras such as the Bavarian State
Orchestra, the Münchner Symphoniker, the Orchestre Philharmonique du
Luxembourg, the Solistes Européens Luxembourg, etc. under the conducting
of leading chefs (Frédéric Chaslin, Jack-Martin Händler, Zubin Mehta,
Bramwell Tovey...).
The international press unanimously highlights the fact that he is able
to use his formidable instrumental command to deliver intellectually and
emotionally well balanced interpretations. The famous French pianist
Jean-Claude Pennetier, president of the jury of the “Concours Poulenc”,
stated: “Everything is there: fingers, head and heart.” His recordings
have also earned excellent reviews in the specialized press: Excellentia
and Supersonic awards by the magazine Pizzicato, Coup de cœur by Piano
Magazine, Arte.tv - The CD Selection.
Lately his cyclic performance of all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas in
concert has received both public and critical acclaim. Next season Jean
Muller will be in residence for the CAMERATA cycle, organized by
the Solistes Européens and the Soirées de Luxembourg
at the Philharmonie Luxembourg. |
